Christmas Crib Torched

NAGERCOIL, Tamil Nadu(SAR NEWS) --A Christmas crib erected at Kulasekaram village, 35 km from here, was torched by unidentified miscreants on the night of December 16.

A group of Christian youth, led by Rajesh of Kulasekaram, had erected a bamboo-wood crib on the roadside spending about Rs. 30,000. Around 11 p.m., the youth group left the place. During midnight, unidentified miscreants allegedly set fire to the crib reducing it to ashes.

The Kulasekaram police had filed a case and forensic experts had visited the site. The Christian youth group had preferred a complaint with the district collector of Kanyakumari and the superintendent of police.

It is the tradition of Kanyakumari Christians to erect cribs on roadsides, decorate and illuminate them during the month of December. They use lemon grass collected from forests and forest periphery as the outer cover for cribs.

Kanyakumari has 50 percent Christians. Denominations such as the Roman Catholics, Latin Catholics, Syro- Malabar, Syro-Malankara, Orthodox, Lutherans, Salvation Army, Pentecostal Mission, Assemblies of God and independent churches serve the people with in the fields of education, medicine and hospitality.
