AICC Welcomes Appointment Of Christian To Manipur Minorities Panel

IMPHAL, Manipur (SAR NEWS) – The All India Christian Council (AICC) has welcomed the Manipur government’s decision to appoint a Christian member representative to the State Minorities Commission.
“This appointment of Rev. N. Debendra Singh as the Christian representative in the State Commission for minorities, April 1, 2011, for a three year term will help address the problems of the Christian minorities in the state, an AICC press release said April 21.
The other members of the commission are Dr. M. S. Ningombam (Buddhist) and retired IAS officer, A. Halim Choudhury (Muslim).
AICC president Joseph D’Souza, welcoming the appointment, said, “This is a long-awaited and much-needed appointment by the Manipur government. Now the appointment of the representative from Muslim, Christian and Buddhist communities to the State Minorities Commission will serve each community’s welfare better.”
The appointment of the Christian member to the Minority Commission comes after the request and recommendation of the Christian Council.
John Dayal, AICC secretary general, and Rev. Madhu Chandra, AICC public relations officer and spokesperson of North East Support Centre & Helpline, made a representation to the Manipur chief secretary about the need for a Christian representation in the commission in September last year.
Debendra Singh serves as the vice-president of the AICC Manipur Chapter. He also holds the position of vice-president of the All Manipur Meitei Christian Minority Forum. He also served with the Meitei Baptist Association for 15 years as youth secretary and executive secretary till his retirement in 2008.
